Didi Conn Reflects on Working Alongside Ringo Starr in ‘Shining Time Station’
Didi Conn, famously known for her role as Frenchy in the iconic film “Grease,” recently shared fond memories of her time working with Ringo Starr on the beloved children’s series “Shining Time Station.” The actress opened up about her experiences with Starr and another co-star, George Carlin, during their time on the show.
Starr and Conn were both part of the “Thomas the Tank Engine” series, which debuted in 1989. The American spin-off, “Shining Time Station,” was a combination of Thomas the Tank Engine stories and live-action scenes with actors. The show aired on PBS from 1989 to 1993, captivating young audiences with its charming tales.

During the first season of “Shining Time Station,” Starr took on the role of Mr. Conductor before passing the baton to Carlin for the following seasons. Despite their petite stature on screen (just 20 centimeters tall), both actors made a lasting impact on viewers with their performances.
Conn portrayed Stacy Jones, the station manager, throughout the series’ three seasons. Recalling her time on set, she shared that many fans still recognise her for her role in the show, even decades later. The actress mentioned how she encounters people who watched the show as children and reminisce about their love for the characters.

While working on the show, Conn revealed that Starr exuded a laid-back and hippie vibe, often welcoming his co-stars into his trailer while listening to oldies music. She described him and his wife, Barbara Bach, as genuinely kind individuals. Carlin, too, left a lasting impression with his warmth and talent, despite his character’s small size.
Following Carlin’s passing in 2008, the show continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans who grew up watching “Shining Time Station” and the original “Thomas & Friends” series. This year marked the 80th anniversary of The Railway Series, which inspired the beloved children’s shows, showcasing the enduring legacy of the franchise.
Apart from her role in “Grease,” Conn has continued to grace screens with her presence in various projects like “Harlan Coben’s Shelter” and “Overcompensating.” Reflecting on her diverse roles over the years, Conn shared a humorous anecdote about initially hesitating to audition for a part that required her to play an “old lady who curses a lot.” However, she embraced the challenge and delivered a memorable performance.
As fans continue to cherish the memories of “Shining Time Station” and the talented cast that brought it to life, Conn’s recollections shed light on the camaraderie and joy that defined their time on the show. With each nostalgic reference to the series, audiences are reminded of the magic of childhood entertainment that endures through the years.
