An elderly woman, Chisako Kakehi, found herself entangled in a web of tragedy and deceit as she sought companionship after the loss of her husband of 25 years. Chisako, a printing factory employee, began dating 78-year-old Toshiaki Suehiro in 2007. However, their brief romance took a dark turn when Suehiro fell ill and later died from cancer, sparking suspicions of foul play.

In 2011, Chisako met 71-year-old Masanori Honda, whom she planned to marry. Sadly, Honda passed away under mysterious circumstances shortly after spending time with Chisako. The pattern repeated when Chisako’s next partner, Minoru Hioki, succumbed to a sudden illness after dining with her in 2013. The string of deaths caught the attention of authorities, leading to a closer investigation into Chisako’s relationships.

Chisako’s fourth marriage, to 75-year-old Isao Kakehi, proved to be her undoing. Isao’s sudden death after a meal with Chisako raised suspicions, prompting a thorough autopsy that revealed cyanide poisoning as the cause of death. This discovery led to Chisako’s arrest in 2014 for the murders of Isao, Honda, and Hioki, as well as the attempted murder of Suehiro. She was soon dubbed Japan’s “Black Widow” by the media.
During her trial in 2017, Chisako confessed to poisoning Isao out of resentment, claiming she felt financially slighted compared to his previous partner. Despite her lawyers arguing that she suffered from dementia, Chisako was found guilty and sentenced to hang. The Supreme Court upheld the decision in 2021, citing financial motives behind the murders.
Chisako Kakehi’s reign of terror came to an end when she passed away in a detention center in Osaka at the age of 78 in December 2024. Her case serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who use relationships for nefarious purposes, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.
The tragic tale of Chisako Kakehi highlights the complexities of human relationships and the depths of deception that some individuals are willing to go to for personal gain. The story serves as a cautionary reminder to exercise caution and vigilance in matters of the heart, as danger can sometimes lurk where we least expect it.
