In a surprising turn of events, Sarah Ferguson, following her ex-husband Prince Andrew’s decision to relinquish his royal titles, has announced that she will no longer use her Duchess of York title. This decision marks a significant shift for the former couple, who will continue to reside at their Windsor Castle estate despite the recent developments concerning their royal titles.

Prince Andrew’s announcement on October 17 to forgo his royal titles extended to his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, as well. The Duke of York, King Charles’ younger brother, had been granted the title upon his marriage to Ferguson in 1986 by Queen Elizabeth. This move had bestowed upon Ferguson the prestigious title of Duchess of York, a name she had retained even after her divorce from Andrew in 1996.
While Sarah Ferguson has been known professionally by her given name, she will now exclusively use it in all aspects of her life, signalling the end of her association with the Duchess of York title. Despite the changes in titles, the former couple will continue living together at Royal Lodge, emphasising their amicable relationship and commitment to their family.
Notably, the royal titles of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will remain unchanged and unaffected by the recent developments. The royal family has expressed support for the decision made by Prince Andrew, as it aligns with the shift in focus towards King Charles and the monarchy’s work.
Sarah Ferguson, affectionately known as Fergie, has been a prominent figure in the public eye for decades. Despite their divorce nearly three decades ago, Ferguson and Andrew have maintained a close bond, evident in their shared residence at Royal Lodge and their joint attendance at royal family events. Their enduring partnership underscores their commitment to their family and mutual respect for one another.
In a previous interview in 2021, Sarah Ferguson spoke about embracing her true identity beyond the titles and labels associated with her. She acknowledged the different facets of herself in the public domain, stating, “I’ve really become Sarah. The Duchess is there. Good old Fergie’s there too. But Sarah is authentically present.” This sentiment reflects her journey towards self-discovery and personal growth.
Prince Andrew’s decision to step away from his titles comes amidst ongoing scrutiny and allegations surrounding his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender. Andrew’s withdrawal from royal duties in 2019 following a controversial BBC interview further compounded the public’s perception of him. His recent choice to distance himself from his titles aims to alleviate distractions and refocus on his family and duty.
The resounding impact of Prince Andrew’s decision reverberates within the royal family, yet Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s positions will remain unaffected. As the monarchy navigates through these changes, the enduring bond between the royal family members and their shared commitment to their duties remain steadfast.
