After Getting Lost on a Hike, Dad, 31, ‘Bravely’ Protected His 3 Young Kids in Freezing Weather: Family

A father’s heroic act of protecting his two young children during a hiking mishap has captured hearts.

The family of Micah Smith, a 31-year-old man, revealed that he courageously shielded his three kids when they became lost while hiking in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah. The family outing turned into a harrowing ordeal as the father and his children, aged 2, 4, and 8, ventured into the Broads Fork Trail area.

According to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the family was reported missing, prompting a search and rescue operation. Fortunately, on October 12, first responders located Micah and the children and swiftly transported them to local medical facilities for evaluation and treatment.

Tragically, two of the children were in critical condition, with the third stable, while Micah was listed in fair condition. Micah’s brother, Zach, detailed the terrifying experience in a GoFundMe campaign, recounting how the family was caught in a storm on the peaks of Twin Peaks. Zach praised Micah for his selfless act of protecting his children in freezing conditions until rescue teams located them the following day.

Micah sustained severe frostbite, while his children were hospitalised. One of his sons, Ezra, is currently undergoing treatment with a heart and lung bypass machine. Zach described Micah as a devoted father who enjoys embarking on adventures with his children.

In a recent update on the fundraising page, Zach shared that Micah’s two sons are showing signs of improvement, although Ezra remains in the intensive care unit. The family is optimistic about Ezra’s recovery but remains concerned about potential neurological effects. Despite his injuries, Micah has displayed remarkable strength, even walking a little as he reunites with his children.

Meanwhile, Micah’s 8-year-old daughter has been discharged from the hospital, marking a small victory in the family’s challenging journey of healing and recovery. Members of the community have expressed their support and sympathy for the Smith family during this difficult period.
