Kat Timpf was diagnosed with breast cancer in February, just hours before welcoming her first child. She underwent a double mastectomy, breast reconstruction and is now preparing for a nipple reconstruction – all while adjusting to motherhood. The Fox News contributor spoke to PEOPLE about her challenging journey and the next steps in her recovery.
Kat Timpf’s breast cancer diagnosis was a shock, leaving her “facing life and death in the same day”. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month took place in October, Timpf shared an update on her health. The 36-year-old’s journey began during her pregnancy when she noticed a bump on her nipple. Initially, she didn’t think much of it due to the changes in her body. However, following her sister’s advice, she saw a doctor who recommended further tests.

Despite being told by doctors not to worry about cancer, a biopsy revealed that Timpf had stage zero breast cancer, known as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). This type of cancer has not spread beyond the milk ducts. The news came as a shock to Timpf, given her negative BRCA gene test results and family history of breast cancer. The diagnosis came on the same day she went into labor and gave birth to her first child.
Due to the early detection of her cancer, Timpf had to make a tough decision between a double mastectomy or a lumpectomy with additional treatment. She opted for the mastectomy to reduce the risk of recurrence, even though it was a difficult choice for her. Following the surgery in March, she and her husband welcomed their son, which added both joy and complexity to her recovery journey.
Adapting to motherhood while undergoing cancer treatment was challenging for Timpf. She highlighted the emotional struggle of not being able to physically care for her newborn son post-surgery, feeling conflicted about her role as a mother. In July, she underwent breast reconstruction surgery, which brought its own mental toll. Coping with these challenges, she emphasised the importance of allowing herself to feel vulnerable during tough moments.
Despite the difficulties, Timpf remains positive and is looking forward to her upcoming nipple reconstruction surgery in December. She expressed excitement about the procedure and even joked about celebrating afterwards. Reflecting on her journey, Timpf acknowledges how the experience has changed her, making her a stronger person. She emphasised the need for women to listen to their bodies and take their health seriously, highlighting the importance of early detection.
Opening up about her journey has been empowering for Timpf, allowing her to share her story and potentially help others in similar situations. By using humour and honesty to navigate her experience, she hopes to inspire women to prioritize their health and not hesitate to seek medical advice. Timpf’s resilience and openness serve as a reminder of the strength that can be found in vulnerability and the importance of advocating for one’s health.
As Timpf continues her recovery and looks ahead to her upcoming surgery, she remains grateful for the support she has received and the opportunity to raise awareness about breast cancer. Her journey is a testament to the resilience and courage displayed by individuals facing health challenges, emphasising the power of sharing experiences to inspire others.
