Scott and Mark Hoying Embrace Diversity in New Book Celebrating Families

Scott Hoying, co-founder of Pentatonix, and his husband Mark have recently released a heartwarming children’s book titled ‘Fa La La Family.’ This exclusive book, published by Henry Holt and Co., serves as a sequel to their 2024 publication ‘How Lucky Am I?’ In ‘Fa La La Family,’ the duo showcases a myriad of families from various backgrounds coming together to celebrate the holiday season.

The inspiration behind their latest project stemmed from their belief that family transcends traditional boundaries. Scott shares, “We just realised that family is community and family is love, no matter what. And so it can look a lot of different types of ways. We wanted to spread that message to any kids or families reading this book. Everyone can see themselves represented in it.”

The book portrays families enjoying festive activities like gatherings and playing in the snow, emphasising the importance of love and togetherness during special occasions. Mark highlights, “We wanted to celebrate all types of families. Family is love, whoever who! We’re so fortunate and lucky that we have our moms and dads, our sisters and brothers that we love so much, but we also have our chosen family—our friends, the people we’ve met over the years who are our family just as much.”

Incorporating their personal experiences into the book, Scott and Mark provided Steph Lew, the illustrator, with pictures from their wedding, family, and childhood homes. Mark mentions a special detail, “One of our favourite pages in the book is a two-page spread of my childhood home where you can see all of my nieces and nephews just running around the house.”

‘Fa La La Family’ features the word for “family” in multiple languages, reflecting the diversity of families worldwide. Mark expresses, “It was really important to us that we could show people all over the world that families can look so many different ways. It was super, super special to us.”

This heartwarming tale is not just a book but an extension of a song from Scott and Mark’s latest children’s album M.Y. F.A.M.I.L.Y. The book includes sheet music and lyrics for the song ‘Fa La La Family,’ allowing readers to sing along with the story.

As Scott gears up for Pentatonix’s upcoming holiday album, ‘Christmas in the City,’ and participates in ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ he hints at a possible third book focusing on dance. Mark shares, “We should make a book about dancing. Oh my gosh, that’s fun.” Their creativity and passion for storytelling continue to flourish beyond ‘Fa La La Family.’

On a personal note, Scott and Mark envision ‘Fa La La Family’ playing a significant role in their future family life. Mark confides, “We really wanted to write a book that we could read to our future kids one day and to pass along the messages about love and joy, especially during the holidays. This book means the world to us for so many reasons.”
