Shannel Pearman, a 29-year-old new mom, found herself in a life-threatening situation due to a headache that was not taken seriously. Shannel, along with her husband Jared, welcomed their first child in June 2019, marking the beginning of what should have been a joyous time in their lives.

Shannel, a successful TV reporter, and Jared, a photographer, were excitedly anticipating their son’s arrival. However, as Shannel’s due date approached, she started experiencing troubling symptoms such as sudden swelling, rapid weight gain, and elevated blood pressure, which were initially dismissed by those around her.
On the day Shannel gave birth, the Pearman home was filled with family members eager to meet the new addition to the family. Amidst the joy and celebrations, Shannel was plagued by a persistent headache. She attributed it to the exhaustion of new motherhood but was unaware of the danger it signaled.
As the night progressed, Shannel’s headache worsened, and she began experiencing visual disturbances. It wasn’t until she suddenly lost half her vision and felt the urge to vomit that she realised something was seriously wrong. Acting on her mother’s advice, who is a nurse, Shannel and Jared rushed to the hospital with their one-week-old baby in tow.
Shannel’s life took a drastic turn when doctors discovered she was suffering from a hemorrhagic stroke caused by a ruptured blood vessel in her brain. Despite being a young, healthy individual with no prior health issues, the severity of her condition was shocking and unexpected for everyone involved.
The subsequent emergency brain surgery, during which half of Shannel’s skull was removed to alleviate the swelling, was a harrowing experience. Following the surgery, Shannel woke up in a different hospital, grappling with the physical and emotional aftermath of the stroke.
Her journey to recovery was challenging, with lingering symptoms and disabilities that altered her daily life significantly. Despite the difficulties, Shannel’s resilience and positivity shone through, inspiring others as she shared her journey on social media, raising awareness about maternal health, Black maternal health, and stroke among young people.
Navigating life with a brain injury presented its own set of challenges for Shannel, affecting every aspect of her daily routines. The road to acceptance was long and arduous, marked by moments of despair and hope as she adapted to her new reality.
Shannel’s story is one of strength, courage, and the unwavering will to live and thrive despite the odds. Her determination to embrace life and create lasting memories with her family serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
