Vasi, the sloth bear, has become the first of his species to receive a prosthetic limb, marking a significant milestone in the world of wildlife conservation. Residing at the Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Centre in Bangalore, India, Vasi’s journey towards recovery and rehabilitation has captured the hearts of many.

Originally a wild bear traversing the lands of Karnataka, India, Vasi’s life took a tragic turn when he fell victim to a wire snare trap in September 2019. The encounter left him with a severely injured hind paw, necessitating his relocation to the Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Centre (BBRC) under the care of Wildlife SOS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding distressed wildlife in India.

At BBRC, Vasi underwent the amputation of his injured leg, adjusting to life on three limbs but unable to return to the wild due to his incapacitation. Despite his physical challenges, Vasi’s playful nature and endearing personality quickly won over the staff at Wildlife SOS and BBRC, setting the stage for his remarkable journey towards receiving a prosthetic limb.
Recognizing the bear’s discomfort in adjusting to walking on three legs, Wildlife SOS, BBRC, Bannerghatta Biological Park, and the Karnataka Forest Department collaborated to initiate the groundbreaking process of creating a custom prosthetic for Vasi. Leading the charge was Derrick Campana, a renowned animal orthotist known as the “Wizard of Paws,” who crafted a bespoke prosthetic designed to withstand the rigors of a bear’s natural behaviour.
The culmination of their efforts saw Vasi fitted with his prosthetic leg by Dr. Arun A. Sha, enabling the bear to walk on all four limbs once again with ease and comfort. Dr. Sha hailed the prosthetic as a ‘medical milestone,’ emphasizing its role in not only restoring Vasi’s mobility but also safeguarding his future health and well-being.
Since embracing his new prosthetic, Vasi has exhibited a newfound confidence, engaging in playful activities and scaling new heights with his climbing abilities. With regular breaks from wearing the device to prevent discomfort, Vasi’s quality of life has significantly improved, offering him the opportunity to thrive in his environment.
Vasi’s remarkable journey serves as a beacon of hope for rescue animals worldwide, demonstrating the resilience and strength of creatures given a second chance through innovation and compassion. His story symbolizes the power of collaboration between science and empathy in transforming lives and inspiring others to champion the cause of wildlife conservation.
As Vasi continues to flourish with his prosthetic limb, he embodies the spirit of perseverance and adaptation in the face of adversity, inspiring all who encounter his story.
