A recent study has raised concerns about the potential dangers of having your hair washed at a salon, with researchers warning that the seemingly relaxing experience could trigger a life-threatening stroke. The review, published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, examined 22 studies spanning nearly five decades and identified 54 cases of what is known as beauty parlor stroke syndrome (BPSS).

Beauty parlor stroke syndrome is caused by the hyperextension of the neck when a person tilts their head back into a salon shampoo bowl. This position can put pressure on the vertebral arteries in the neck, which are responsible for supplying blood to the brain. In some rare instances, this can result in a stroke. The majority of affected individuals, around 80%, were found to be women of varying ages, from teenagers to seniors.
Symptoms of BPSS may include dizziness, blurred vision, loss of balance, headache, nausea, slurred speech, and even sudden paralysis or weakness on one side of the body. These symptoms typically manifest either during or shortly after the neck is placed in the triggering position. One such case involved Elizabeth Smith, who experienced BPSS in 2014, leading to a stroke that has left her with lasting impairments, including an unsteady gait and loss of motor skills in her left hand.
While beauty parlor stroke syndrome is considered rare, health experts stress the importance of taking precautions to prevent such incidents. Some states, like Arizona, have introduced guidelines for stylists to ensure the safety of their clients. These recommendations include providing neck support, such as rolled towels or cushions, and allowing clients to sit more upright during hair washes. Clients are also encouraged to communicate any discomfort or symptoms like neck strain or dizziness immediately.
In light of the study’s findings, it is crucial for both salon professionals and clients to be aware of the potential risks associated with salon hair-washing. By adhering to safety protocols and promptly addressing any concerns during the service, the likelihood of beauty parlor stroke syndrome can be minimized. This serves as a reminder that even seemingly routine activities can have unforeseen consequences on one’s health.
It is essential for individuals to prioritize their well-being and not overlook any unusual symptoms that may arise following salon treatments. By staying informed and proactive, both salon-goers and haircare professionals can work together to create a safer and more secure environment for all. Beauty should not come at the cost of one’s health, and it is paramount to take all necessary precautions to mitigate any potential risks associated with salon services.
