A recent study delves into the intriguing question of why women tend to outlive men and sheds light on the key factors contributing to this trend. The study, published in the Science Advances journal on October 1, analysed the behaviours of 528 mammal species and found a consistent pattern: females lived 13% longer than males in 72% of the species studied. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology discovered that while biological factors play a role in female longevity, behavioural and social aspects, such as mating practices and caregiving responsibilities, also influence lifespan.

Biology appears to provide females with a natural advantage in longevity, as they possess two X chromosomes compared to males’ single X chromosome. This genetic makeup acts as a “backup” system against genetic mutations, offering females a protective mechanism that is potentially rooted in millions of years of evolution, as explained by study author Fernando Colchero. Moreover, the study highlighted that females often assume caretaker roles, which are associated with longer lifespans due to the need for parents to survive to support their offspring.
Interestingly, the longevity gap between sexes seems to be unique to mammals, as birds, amphibians, and insects exhibit the opposite trend, with males tending to live longer. The study emphasised that a combination of genetic and behavioural differences plays a significant role in shaping life expectancy. For instance, male deer engage in risky behaviours such as growing antlers to compete for mates and fend off rivals, which, while evolutionary advantageous, can have detrimental effects on their lifespan.

In human populations, the study pointed out that men are more likely to engage in risky behaviours such as alcoholism, smoking, and substance abuse, all of which contribute to fatal diseases like lung cancer and heart disease. Additionally, men tend to neglect protective measures like sunscreen, increasing their risk of skin cancer. Colchero suggested that narrowing the longevity gap between the sexes could involve men adopting some of the healthier behaviours typically seen in women and embracing equal domestic responsibilities.
