Stephen Bishop Says He Was Offered Shocking 7-Figure Sum for Guitar That John Belushi Smashed in “Animal House” (Exclusive)

Stephen Bishop Reveals Shocking Offers for Smashed ‘Animal House’ Guitar

Stephen Bishop, the renowned musician and actor, recently disclosed that he has been offered a substantial sum for the iconic guitar that was smashed in the classic film “Animal House.” The guitar, which holds sentimental value for Bishop, has garnered offers in the millions, but he has declined to part with it despite the tempting figures.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Bishop shared that institutions like the Smithsonian have bid up to $5 million for the broken instrument, which was signed by the cast of the movie. However, he remains steadfast in his decision to keep the guitar, which now serves as a cherished memento in his Aspen, Colorado home.

The memorable scene from the 1978 film “Animal House” showcases John Belushi’s character, Belushi, destroying the guitar in an impulsive yet comedic moment. Bishop, who portrayed the “charming guitar guy” in the film, reflected on the offers he has received for the guitar, revealing that it is not currently for sale.

While Bishop is widely recognised for his acting roles, music is his enduring passion. Having released his final album, THIMK, in August 2025, the Grammy-nominated artist collaborated with music legends like Eric Clapton, Sting, and Kenny Loggins on the record.

One notable collaborator on Bishop’s album is Eric Clapton, with whom he shares a long-standing friendship. Despite his illustrious career spanning five decades, Bishop affirms that THIMK marks the end of his music journey, prioritising his role as a father to his young son over pursuing further musical endeavours.

The personal touch on the album is evident, with Bishop incorporating his toddler’s laughter into the music as a tribute to his own experiences growing up. Reflecting on his father’s absence during his childhood, Bishop is committed to being present for his child, enjoying simple pleasures like watching Elmo together.

Married to Liz Kamlet, who also manages his career, since 2021, Bishop values his family life and the joy of parenthood above all else. With a successful career in both music and film, Bishop’s decision to focus on his family signals a new chapter in his life, filled with love and contentment.

As Stephen Bishop’s legacy continues to inspire fans worldwide, his refusal to part with the cherished guitar from “Animal House” reflects his deep connection to his past and the memories associated with his remarkable career in the entertainment industry.
