A former high school teacher, Sandy Carazas-Pinez, 36, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually abusing a 16-year-old student with special needs. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced that Carazas pleaded guilty to enticing a minor into illegal sexual activity, leading to the severe sentencing. The prosecutor’s revealed that the teacher manipulated the student into believing they were engaged in a sexual relationship between November 2022 and February 2023, abusing her position at a school in Yonkers, New York.

According to reports, Carazas sent sexually explicit text messages to the student, including inappropriate photos and messages that implied a romantic connection. The New York Post cited prosecutors who shared one of the disturbing texts where Carazas expressed her longing for the student’s affection. Additionally, the teacher organized sexual encounters and explicit video calls with the victim, referring to these encounters as “gifts” in court documents. The indictment outlined instances where Carazas engaged in sexual acts with the student at various locations, escalating their inappropriate relationship.
The abusive behaviour of Carazas came to light when school officials noticed her off-campus interactions with the victim. The teacher was seen with the student in her car and exhibiting close contact with them in the classroom, prompting her dismissal from the school. Even after her termination, Carazas continued her inappropriate communication with the victim, asking them to delete messages and attempting to cover up their illicit relationship. Consequently, she was indicted on criminal charges in July 2023, and legal proceedings followed.
In addition to the 25-year prison sentence, Carazas will face five years of supervised release and be required to register as a sex offender, as per court rulings.
