Health Crisis: A 460% Increase in Drug-Resistant Bacteria in US

A concerning rise in drug-resistant bacteria infections has been observed in the United States, with health officials reporting a staggering 460% increase. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published an article in the Annals of Internal Medicine journal highlighting the surge in infections of NDM-CRE, a dangerous bacteria that belongs to the carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) group. These bacteria are known to be resistant to some of the most potent antibiotics available on the market.


The CDC warned that treating NDM-CRE infections poses a significant challenge as the bacteria have shown resistance to commonly used antibiotics, making them extremely hard to combat effectively. Infections caused by NDM-CRE include pneumonia, bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, and wound infections, all of which can be life-threatening. The agency stressed that the rise in these infections is alarming and could result in devastating consequences.
According to the CDC’s analysis, there were 4,341 reported cases of CRE infections in 2023, with 1,831 of these cases involving the NDM variety. Shockingly, the data revealed a 69% increase in CRE infections from 2019 to 2023, with NDM cases skyrocketing by a staggering 460%. This worrying trend has raised serious concerns among health experts, who fear that lives may be lost if effective measures are not taken promptly.
Public health experts have expressed deep concerns about the rapid spread of NDM-CRE and its association with high mortality rates. The CDC emphasised the urgent need for healthcare providers to have access to appropriate testing and targeted therapies to effectively combat these drug-resistant bacteria. Danielle Rankin, an epidemiologist at the CDC, stressed the importance of selecting the right treatment, given the complex nature of NDM-CRE infections.
Susan S. Huang, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, raised the alarm about the potential impact of the surge in drug-resistant bacteria. She warned that failing to address this trajectory could lead to the loss of lives, underscoring the critical need for proactive intervention. The CDC’s findings have prompted calls for heightened surveillance and intervention strategies to curb the spread of these infections.
Dr. Jason Burnham, a researcher at Washington University, attributed the significant increase in drug-resistant bacteria to the surge in antibiotic use during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Burnham highlighted a major limitation in the CDC’s report, noting that the data may underestimate the actual scale of the issue. Several states, including California, Florida, New York, and Texas, have not fully reported or tested cases, indicating that the true extent of drug-resistant bacteria infections in the US could be much higher.
As the US grapples with the escalating threat of drug-resistant bacteria, healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers are urged to collaborate closely to develop robust strategies to tackle this pressing public health challenge. The findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced surveillance, infection control measures, and antimicrobial stewardship programs to safeguard against the growing threat of drug-resistant bacteria.
