Father of Three Sustains ‘Severe’ Injuries in Encounter with 6-Foot Shark While Spearfishing

Eddie Jarmakowicz, a father of three from Riviera Beach, Florida, is currently recovering after a harrowing shark attack incident while spearfishing in The Bahamas last month. The 52-year-old fisherman was left with major injuries after being bitten by a shark during his underwater activity in the Grand Cay on August 16.
Being interviewed by local media outlet 25 WPBF, Jarmakowicz described the terrifying moment by stating, “My wrist was hanging down, and I could see flesh, so obviously that was a concern.” Following the attack, he was swiftly flown to a hospital in Florida, where he underwent emergency surgery to address his injuries.
The unfortunate incident occurred when Jarmakowicz, along with three companions, was fishing and snorkeling in waters ranging from 20 to 25 feet deep. He detailed the sequence of events leading up to the attack, mentioning, “I’d speared a mutton snapper. As I was swimming to retrieve the fish, I pulled it close to this (left) hand. I was swimming up to the surface and as I transitioned to look up for the boat, something hit my hand.”
Despite not catching sight of the shark during the attack, Jarmakowicz found himself dealing with grave wounds to his left hand. The injured fisherman recounted, “I believe that my hand was all the way into the shark’s mouth by the lacerations that came up the forearm.” He expressed his gratitude for the quick response of his companions in getting him rescued and back to shore.
It took the group around 45 minutes to return to land following the traumatic incident. Jarmakowicz was promptly transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce by a local pilot. Trauma surgeon Dr. Aleta Paschal detailed the severity of Jarmakowicz’s injuries, noting, “He had a major injury where we consider it a mangled extremity, multiple muscles that were exposed, tendons that were involved.” The surgeon further explained the extensive surgery that was required to repair eight tendons in Jarmakowicz’s forearm, along with addressing additional injuries towards the wrist.
Despite the extensive surgery and challenging road to recovery ahead, Jarmakowicz was discharged from the hospital the following day. He is expected to undergo several months of physical therapy to regain functionality in his injured hand.
