Massachusetts Police Therapy Dog Dies in Car Crash that Injures Handler

A tragic incident has struck Wilmington, Massachusetts, as the community mourns the loss of Zena, a beloved 3-year-old police therapy dog. Zena, a Bernedoodle, met with a fatal end in a two-car crash on September 23, accompanied by her handler Samantha Cavanaugh. The duo worked tirelessly with the Wilmington Police Department’s Health & Recovery Unit, bringing comfort and support to those in need.
The heart-wrenching turn of events took place in Tewksbury, when a Mazda 3, driven by a 26-year-old woman, veered across the double yellow line, colliding with the Toyota Camry carrying Cavanaugh and Zena. In line with Nero’s Law in Massachusetts, which grants service animals the right to be transported in ambulances if injured on duty, Zena was rushed in an ambulance to Bulger Animal Hospital in Lawrence. Despite efforts to save her, Zena succumbed to her injuries, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and service.
Cavanaugh, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. The Tewksbury Police Department, led by Police Chief Ryan Columbus, is conducting an investigation into the tragic accident. As the community grapples with the loss of Zena, tributes pour in for the canine companion who touched the lives of many.
Described as a “beloved member of the community,” Zena served as a comfort dog, offering solace to individuals in various settings such as community groups, schools, and senior citizen centers. Following the crash, the driver of the Mazda 3 will face charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lane violation, as confirmed by the Tewksbury Police Department. Wilmington Police Chief Brian Pupa expressed the profound impact of Zena’s work, stating, “For three years, Zena put residents and families at ease even during the toughest of times, and her work will not be forgotten. She served her community well.” Zena’s legacy as a dedicated therapy dog with a gentle soul lives on in the hearts of those who knew her.
