Hiker Swept into Creek While Attempting ‘Dangerous Crossing.’ After 3 Months of Searching, His Body Has Been Found

The body of a missing hiker, Tim Sandford, from Minnesota has been discovered over three months after he vanished while attempting a dangerous crossing in Montana. The tragic incident occurred on June 8, when Sandford was swept into East Rosebud Creek, near the outlet of Rimrock Lake. The discovery was announced by Montana authorities who identified the victim as Tim Sandford from Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Tim Sandford, 23, disappeared while trying to cross Rimrock Lake along the “Beaten Path” trail. His body was found 1,500 feet downstream from the outlet of the creek after an extensive search effort that lasted more than three months. The recovery operation was challenging due to fast-moving water, waterfalls, rugged terrain, and large boulders in the area.

After months of searching, search teams located Sandford’s body using an aerial drone and water rescue dive team members. The victim was caught in the creek amidst treacherous conditions that hampered immediate recovery efforts. It was only when water levels subsided during late summer that the searchers were able to access and retrieve Sandford’s remains.

Chief Tom Kuntz of Red Lodge Fire Rescue expressed gratitude for the dedication and hard work put into the search operation, stating, “After more than three months of dedicated search operations and hundreds of hours of volunteer time, we are grateful to finally be able to bring Tim home to his family.” The tragic incident highlighted the dangerous nature of the area, with a bridge at the Rimrock Lake outlet having been destroyed in a previous flood in 2022.

The Red Lodge Fire Rescue mentioned that efforts were underway to improve safety in the area by constructing a replacement bridge at the Rimrock Lake outlet. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with outdoor activities in challenging terrains, urging hikers to exercise caution and be prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

The search efforts involved various resources, including ground teams, drone operators, helicopter support, K9 search dogs, and water rescue dive teams.
