A 71-year-old man has been arrested and charged with allegedly touching a woman inappropriately as she slept during a flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia. The incident took place on Monday, Sept. 22, prompting the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to take action upon the flight’s arrival at Melbourne Airport. The man’s case was heard at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court in Victoria just two days after the reported incident on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

According to the AFP, the woman informed airline crew members while on the flight that the man had inappropriately touched and reached inside her clothing as she was trying to sleep. Subsequently, the flight crew moved the woman to a different seat for the remainder of the journey and informed the AFP. Upon landing, the police interviewed the 71-year-old man, as well as witnesses present during the incident.
Identified as Mounir Botros by various Australian media outlets, the man made a remote appearance in court via video link. He remained silent during the proceedings, as per reports from The Sydney Morning Herald. The AFP arrested Botros and charged him with one count of an act of indecency without consent, in line with section 60 of the Crimes Act 1900 (ACT). The maximum penalty for such an offense is seven years in prison.
Botros’ lawyer initially tried to prevent media coverage of her client, citing the detrimental psychological effects of police releases and court document access applications. However, the lawyer eventually withdrew the application. AFP Detective Superintendent Stephen Cook emphasized the gravity with which law enforcement treats any reports of inappropriate or criminal behavior, whether on land or in the air, ensuring the safety and security of all passengers.
The case has been adjourned until Nov. 20 to allow for the prosecution to compile the necessary evidence. Botros is currently out on bail pending his next court appearance.
