A recent incident in Los Angeles involving a delivery robot nearly crashing into a man with cerebral palsy has raised concerns about the safety and accessibility of such technologies. Mark Chaney, who was using his mobility scooter at the time, encountered a Serve Robotics cart that was reportedly moving erratically on the sidewalk. Despite Chaney’s attempts to give the robot space to pass, it allegedly blocked him and cut him off, almost resulting in a collision. The incident, captured on video and shared on social media, has prompted discussions about the need for inclusivity when designing and testing new technologies.

In an interview with KTLA, Chaney described the robot’s behaviour as strange, stating that it abruptly stopped in front of him, causing his scooter to bump into it. He also claimed that the robot had previously almost bumped into him, leading him to start recording the encounter. Serve Robotics, the company behind the autonomous delivery robot, disputed Chaney’s account, stating that the robot came to a full stop in response to sensing a pedestrian nearby. According to Serve Robotics, their robots are designed to have 360° visibility and respond to objects approaching from behind to ensure safe interactions.
Following the incident, Chaney expressed frustration over what he perceived as Serve Robotics brushing off his complaint. As an advocate for people with disabilities, he emphasised the importance of testing new technologies like delivery robots against various mobility aids, including wheelchairs and scooters.
