Arthur Sze Named 25th U.S. Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress

Renowned author and translator Arthur Sze has been appointed as the 25th U.S. Poet Laureate by the prestigious Library of Congress, marking a significant moment in the literary world. The announcement was made by the Library of Congress on Monday, Sept. 15, signifying a new chapter in American poetry.

Arthur Sze is set to commence his duties as the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for 2025-2026 on October 9 with a special reading of his work at the Library’s illustrious Coolidge Auditorium. Tickets for this event will be made available for purchase on loc.gov starting September 18, allowing poetry enthusiasts to witness this momentous occasion.

Expressing his gratitude and astonishment at being named the Poet Laureate, Sze, reflecting on his journey as the son of Chinese immigrants and a former MIT student who pursued his passion for poetry, remarked, “It’s a recognition that belongs to teachers, librarians, editors, poets, readers – everyone who works tirelessly on behalf of poetry.”

In addition to his role as a poet, Arthur Sze is also known for his skill as a translator and has ambitious plans to translate poetry from various languages during his tenure as the Poet Laureate. The prolific author has an extensive body of work, with 12 poetry collections to his name, including titles like “Into the Hush” (2025), “The White Orchard: Selected Interviews, Essays, and Poems” (2025), and “The Glass Constellation: New and Collected Poems” (2021). Notably, Sze has been honoured with distinguished awards such as the Bollingen Prize for American Poetry and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize.

Acting Librarian of Congress Robert Randolph Newlen praised Sze’s poetic prowess, highlighting his unique perspective and formal innovation that sets him apart in the literary landscape. Newlen commended Sze for his ability to draw from diverse traditions and influences, creating poetry that transcends boundaries of time and space.

Throughout history, notable poets like Joy Harjo, Tracy K. Smith, and Billy Collins have held the esteemed position of Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, using their platforms to elevate the appreciation of poetry in American society.
