A tragic incident in Delaware left one teenage boy dead and another seriously injured after an electric bicycle collided with a school bus. The accident occurred on Friday, Sept. 12, at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time, as the bus was travelling eastbound on West Lebanon Road and turned into the right lane onto Royal Grant Way in Dover. The e-bike was travelling eastbound on a paved sidewalk next to the right lane when it struck the passenger side of the bus, according to Delaware State Police (DSP).

The 14-year-old boy, who was believed to be the passenger on the e-bike, was rushed to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. His identity has not been publicly disclosed. The other teen, a 16-year-old male who is thought to have been the driver of the e-bike, sustained serious injuries and was also taken to the hospital. Neither of the teenagers was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, as revealed by the police report.
Thankfully, the 75-year-old male driver of the school bus and the 21 elementary school passengers on board did not suffer any injuries. The bus was associated with the Caesar Rodney School District. Dr. Corey Miklus, the school district’s superintendent, expressed deep sadness over the accident and confirmed that counselling and support services would be provided to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Following the crash, the area where the collision occurred was closed for around four hours to facilitate the investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit.
