A New Mexico mother, Donna Phillips, at the age of 22, has been accused of fatally abusing her infant son, Calian Skywater, and alleging that the injuries were a result of “rough play with a sibling.” Phillips and Onesimus Skywater, 33, were taken into custody on Wednesday, September 10, following the death of their 1-year-old son. The Clovis Police Department disclosed that Calian was pronounced dead after being brought to Plains Regional Medical Center unresponsive with severe injuries to his head, face, and arms on November 27, 2024.

An initial autopsy revealed that Calian had extensive bruising covering 70-80% of his body, along with head trauma. A subsequent autopsy in April 2025 confirmed major blunt trauma to his head and other physical injuries. Donna Phillips informed investigators that her child’s injuries were the result of rough play with a sibling and a fall from a high chair. However, a doctor’s assessment concluded that the injuries Calian sustained were indicative of child abuse, contradicting Phillips’ claims.
The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator initially classified Calian’s death as “undetermined.” Nevertheless, further examination showed that the injuries he suffered were consistent with physical abuse, leading authorities to assert that the “totality of the findings present are diagnostic of fatal physical abuse inflicted upon Calian.”
Phillips had previously stated that Calian had fallen a few days before, causing his injuries, and had been seen by a pediatric physician. Tragically, the incident occurred shortly after Calian and his siblings were returned to their mother’s care, having been in foster care following their birth in November 2023. The children were taken from Phillips at the time of Calian’s birth by the New Mexico Children Youth and Families Division (CYFD).
Subsequent to their arrest, both Phillips and Skywater were charged with Intentional Abuse of a Child Resulting in the Child’s Death. They are currently detained at the Curry County Adult Detention Center. Calian’s siblings are now under the care of a foster family in New Mexico.
