After spending an unexpected nine months in space, astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams, aged 59, is sharing insights into her experience and discussing her tentative plans for retirement in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine.

Williams, a NASA astronaut, recently returned home from an extended stay at the International Space Station, where she and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore found themselves staying longer than originally planned due to issues with their spacecraft. What was supposed to be a week-long mission turned into a 286-day stay in space, filled with spacewalks, experiments, and maintenance work.
Despite the challenges of the extended mission, Williams speaks fondly of her time in space and the bonds she formed with her fellow crew members, particularly Wilmore, whom she describes as a brother. The unexpected circumstances also meant that Williams had to prepare her family for her prolonged absence, ensuring that they were aware of the situation and supported her throughout her time in space.
For Williams, one of the most significant aspects of returning to Earth was reuniting with her loved ones, including her husband and two dogs. She jokes about having to make up for lost time by taking on tasks such as shoveling snow and walking the dogs, while also cherishing simple pleasures like showers, which were unavailable in space.
Upon her return, Williams has been focusing on readjusting to life on Earth, including engaging in physical activities like hiking with her husband and dogs. She acknowledges the importance of maintaining her health and fitness, having worked out regularly in space to combat the effects of microgravity on her body.
Looking ahead, Williams is considering retirement from NASA, where she has worked since 1998, and contemplating a career working with animals, a long-held passion of hers. While retirement is still a daunting prospect for Williams, she sees it as an opportunity to embark on a new chapter in her life and pursue interests outside of space exploration.
As Williams reflects on her remarkable journey to space and back, her story serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of astronauts who push the boundaries of human exploration. Her experiences offer a glimpse into the challenges and rewards of living and working in the vast expanse of space, while also highlighting the importance of family, connection, and the simple joys of homecoming.
