Tiana Mangakahia, a former Syracuse basketball player, has tragically passed away after battling breast cancer for six years. The news of her passing was shared by her family on Instagram and confirmed by Syracuse University Athletics. She was just 30 years old at the time of her death in her hometown of Brisbane, Australia.
Mangakahia made a name for herself as a talented point guard during her tenure with the Orange from 2017 to 2021. Despite her health struggles, she made a remarkable return to the basketball court in Australia earlier this year. Her family described her as a radiant soul who touched the lives of everyone she encountered with her kindness, strength, and warmth. They praised her for her unwavering courage and grace until the very end.
The former Syracuse player was first diagnosed with Stage 2 Grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma in November 2019, which sidelined her from the 2019-2020 season. However, she made a courageous comeback the following season, becoming an inspiration to many at the university. Mangakahia’s impact was profound, earning her the title of the 2018-2019 Female Athlete of the Year during her time at Syracuse.
Throughout her college years, Mangakahia led the Orange to three NCAA Tournaments, solidifying her position as a key player on the team. Her coach, Felisha Legette-Jack, hailed her as the “ultimate fighter” for showing incredible strength and resilience during her battle with cancer. Mangakahia’s legacy at Syracuse is one of determination and perseverance, leaving an indelible mark on the university’s basketball program.
Despite leaving Syracuse as a decorated player with numerous records, including the program leader in assists and free throw percentage, Mangakahia continued her basketball journey by playing professionally in Russia, France, and Australia, with a brief stint on the Phoenix Mercury’s practice squad. Although she officially retired from the sport in 2023, her passion for basketball never waned, as she returned to the court this year to play for her hometown club, the Southern District Spartans.
