44 Poodles Seized from ‘Filthy, Unhealthy’ Oregon Home in Suspected Puppy Mill Case

In a distressing case of suspected animal neglect, 44 poodles were among 49 animals seized from a residence on Elk Lane in Alfalfa, Oregon. The owner of the animals, Lorinda Maxwell, 62, now faces 49 felony counts of animal neglect in the second degree. The operation, suspected to be a puppy mill, came to light after a concerned woman reported health issues with her dog adopted from Maxwell’s business, Kameo Poodles.
Responding to the report, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office intervened and discovered the animals living in deplorable conditions inside the house. The scene was described as filthy and unhealthy, with strong odours of urine and ammonia permeating the air. The animals were found in dirty crates and surrounded by soiled blankets, indicating severe neglect and mistreatment.
Among the rescued animals were a mix of standard, miniature and toy poodles, along with three cats. Shocking images shared by the DCSO revealed the poodles with severely matted and tangled fur due to lack of grooming, some even living in crates filled with excrement. The distressing conditions pointed towards a prioritisation of quantity over quality, suggesting profit as the primary motive behind the operation.
Following the rescue, the animals were transferred to the Humane Society of Central Oregon for medical attention and care. Unfortunately, they are not currently available for adoption as the shelter’s capacity has been exceeded, leading to a court hold on the new arrivals. The Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with relevant information about Kameo Poodles or Lorinda Maxwell to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The incident has shed light on the ongoing issue of puppy mills and the inhumane treatment of animals for profit. Authorities are pushing for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent such cases of neglect and abuse from occurring in the future.
