Alayna Riozzi-Bodine, a two-time cancer survivor, recently shared her joy on social media after achieving a significant milestone in her recovery journey – being able to wear a ponytail for the first time since losing her hair to cancer treatment. This inspiring moment, which went viral on TikTok, marked a special moment of triumph and resilience for the 21-year-old nursing student from Monmouth University.

Riozzi-Bodine’s cancer journey began at the young age of 17 when she was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021. The news of her diagnosis came as a shock, bringing forth immediate concerns about survival and the possibility of losing her hair. Despite the challenges, she underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy and managed to retain her hair by using a cold cap treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering, a rare opportunity for a pediatric patient.
The use of a cold cap during her initial diagnosis provided a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos of treatment, allowing Riozzi-Bodine to maintain a semblance of her identity. However, a relapse in 2023 necessitated a bone marrow transplant, leading to the loss of her hair and a profound sense of loss of self. The absence of her hair served as a visual reminder of the toll cancer was taking on her, stripping away a part of her identity and leaving her feeling consumed by the disease.
Following her successful transplant in 2024, Riozzi-Bodine was declared cancer-free for the first time in four years in July 2025. This victory not only signified a physical triumph but also symbolized a powerful emotional and psychological milestone in her recovery journey. Regrowing her hair became a tangible representation of healing and growth, both physically and emotionally.
The momentous occasion of being able to gather her short curls into a ponytail once again held deep significance for Riozzi-Bodine. It represented a journey of resilience, hope, and renewal, highlighting the passage of time and the progress she had made in her recovery. The simple act of styling her hair into a ponytail evoked feelings of joy and nostalgia, reconnecting her with a sense of normalcy and empowerment.
Through her social media presence and advocacy work, Riozzi-Bodine has shared her story of survival and strength with a global audience, inspiring others with her message of resilience and determination. Her experience has led her to establish the Alayna Jayne Foundation, aimed at supporting adolescent and young adult cancer patients through various means, from financial assistance for cold caps to scholarships and retreats.
Despite her journey to becoming cancer-free again, Riozzi-Bodine acknowledges that the road to recovery is ongoing, marked by lifelong side effects from her treatments. Each day serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Moving forward, she plans to focus on healing, completing her nursing studies, and continuing her advocacy work to support and uplift others facing similar challenges.
As Riozzi-Bodine embraces the next chapter of her life post-cancer, she looks forward to returning to her passion for competitive athletics, specifically triathlons, which she had to put on hold during her treatment. This personal goal represents not only a physical challenge but also a symbolic triumph over adversity, reclaiming her life and legacy beyond cancer.
In the face of adversity, Riozzi-Bodine’s story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all of the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of perseverance. Her journey is a testament to the strength and courage found within each individual facing their own battles, embodying the mantra that, no matter the challenges, we can thrive and survive.
