Ashley Ness, a mother of three-year-old triplets – two boys named Chance and Cheston, and a daughter named Chatham – embarked on a bittersweet journey as she enrolled her children in preschool. The absence of their sister, Chesley, who did not survive, lingered heavily in Ness’s heart, especially during significant milestones.

The quadruplets were born as two sets of identical twins, a rare occurrence with odds of one in 10 million, according to experts in obstetrics. Born prematurely, the quads spent about 10 weeks in a hospital in Boston before three of them were allowed to go home. However, Chesley, born weighing only 1 lb., 7 oz., required multiple surgeries and sadly passed away just before turning seven months old.
Ness, a 38-year-old part-time hair stylist living in Taunton, Mass., expressed that Chesley is always in her thoughts. The emotional impact hits hardest during major milestones, leaving Ness overwhelmed with grief. She recalls the day she brought her children to school for enrollment, feeling the absence of Chesley keenly as she watched her other children walk in.
The unique pregnancy journey started with Ness discovering she was pregnant with quadruplets during a routine gynecologist visit in 2022. What she initially thought was a case of twins turned out to be a miraculous conception of four babies in two placenta sacks, resulting in two sets of identical twins.
The challenges continued post-delivery with Chesley’s delicate health condition, which required extensive medical care that tragically ended with her passing. Despite the heartache, Ness has immersed herself in caring for her surviving children and ensuring they thrive with early intervention programs to monitor their development.
The personalities of Chatham, Chance, and Cheston have blossomed over the years since Chesley’s passing. Chatham, the only surviving twin to Chesley, has emerged as a spirited leader among her siblings, embodying a sassy and assertive demeanor that keeps her brothers in line.
As the children grow older, Ness cherishes every moment spent with them, including commemorating Chesley’s memory in their family traditions. From themed birthdays to visits to the cemetery where Chesley rests, Ness openly discusses Chesley with her children, fostering a loving remembrance of their absent sibling.
Ness’s openness about her experience also provides comfort and solace to others who have faced loss, as she has found that sharing her story not only aids in her healing process but also helps others navigate their grief. The community support and understanding she receives reinforce the significance of honouring Chesley’s memory.
Looking towards the future, Ness anticipates the day when she can share more about Chesley with her children as they grow older and better understand the impact of their sister’s absence. Despite the passing of time, the memory of Chesley remains a poignant part of Ness’s family narrative, shaping their collective journey with love and remembrance.
