After seven long years at an animal shelter and a failed adoption attempt, a heartwarming story unfolded in Ohio as a dog named Nitro finally found his forever home. Nitro, a Great Dane mix, had been residing at The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Warren, Ohio since 2018, making him the shelter’s longest-standing resident. The journey to adoption was not an easy one for Nitro, but his story took a happy turn in late August when a family decided to give him the loving home he had been waiting for.

The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project, founded by Jason Cooke, shared the news of Nitro’s adoption on social media, expressing their joy at seeing him find a permanent place in a family’s heart. Despite not testing positive for any medical conditions, volunteers at the shelter recognized that Nitro needed special attention and care to prepare him for his future home. Through training and care from the project, Nitro blossomed into an 80-pound “teddy bear,” described by Cooke as having the energy of a playful toddler.

Despite his friendly nature and good behaviour, Nitro faced challenges in finding a home, becoming overlooked and eventually becoming the shelter’s longest resident. A previous adoption attempt in July 2025 unfortunately didn’t work out, but that setback did not deter the shelter’s hopes of finding the perfect match for Nitro. The shelter staff remained optimistic that a loving family was still out there, waiting to welcome Nitro into their lives.

The shelter’s fears of Nitro reaching a seven-year milestone at the shelter were put to rest when a family from Greenford, Ohio visited and decided to make Nitro a part of their family. This heartwarming moment marked the end of a long wait for Nitro and a new beginning in a loving home. Cooke had previously expressed his anticipation of a joyous celebration when Nitro would finally be adopted, a testament to the dedication of the shelter’s volunteers who work tirelessly to care for their animals.
Nitro’s story is a reminder of the importance of patience, perseverance, and the unwavering dedication of animal shelters and volunteers in ensuring that every furry friend finds a place to call home. The journey from a shelter puppy to a beloved family member may have been a long and challenging one for Nitro, but his tale is now one of hope and happiness as he embarks on a new chapter in his forever home. The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project continues its mission to rescue and care for animals in need, spreading love and joy one adoption at a time.
