EMS treated a total of nine individuals for minor injuries, with five of them being taken to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. Four of the patrons refused additional medical attention. The Department of Buildings revealed to CBS News New York and News 12 Long Island that a section of the ceiling measuring 10-by-10 inches collapsed due to potential water damage, causing debris to fall on the diners inside.
Following the incident, the Department of Buildings issued a violation to the building’s owner for alleged negligence in maintaining the property. Despite attempts to reach out to IHOP for a statement, there has been no immediate response provided by the restaurant chain as of Sunday, September 7th.
Eyewitnesses shared their accounts of the unsettling event, with one individual, Jamie Lee, recounting the moments leading up to the collapse. Lee described hearing unusual noises while seated for a meal, only to turn around and find the entire ceiling collapsing. In response to the structural failure, a vacate order was posted on the restaurant’s door, indicating that entry was not permitted.
