A neonatal nurse in Argentina, Brenda Cecilia Agüero, found herself at the centre of a horrifying case that shook the nation as she was accused of administering fatal doses of potassium and insulin to newborns under her care. The result? Tragically, five innocent babies lost their lives, while eight others fought for survival. Agüero’s actions were described by prosecutors as akin to ‘playing God’ as she decided the fate of these vulnerable infants, injecting them with deadly chemicals during her shifts at the neonatal unit. The heinous crimes have led to her receiving a life sentence at Bouwer Penitentiary, with eligibility for parole after 35 years.

During the course of a six-month trial and around 10 hours of deliberation, a jury in Córdoba convicted Agüero on five counts of aggravated murder and eight counts of attempted murder. Despite being behind bars, she maintained her innocence, vehemently denying any wrongdoing and claiming she was being made a scapegoat for wider systemic failures within the hospital. Attorney Daniela Morales Leanza, representing the prosecution, highlighted Agüero’s pattern of behaviour, characterising it as ‘playing God’ by choosing the life and death of these vulnerable infants.
Psychological and psychiatric evaluations presented in court painted a disturbing picture of Agüero’s mindset, revealing traits of narcissism, lack of empathy, and a disturbing satisfaction in the suffering of others. Motivated by a desire for recognition and career advancement, Agüero’s actions were not only reprehensible but also highlighted a deeply troubling psychological profile that allowed her to carry out such horrific acts.
The first red flag in this case emerged in March 2022 at the Hospital Materno Neonatal Ramón Carrillo, where a previously stable newborn suddenly went into cardiorespiratory distress. Subsequent incidents over the following weeks, including cases of acute respiratory failure and unexplained cardiac arrests, prompted two neonatologists to raise concerns and trigger a formal investigation into Agüero’s actions. The situation escalated dramatically on June 6–7, 2022, when two babies tragically lost their lives, and two more were on the brink of death during a single shift.
Prosecutors detailed how Agüero allegedly injected potassium and insulin into the infants, inducing fatal arrhythmias that led to their untimely deaths. Autopsies conducted on the deceased infants revealed high levels of potassium consistent with injection, while experts testified that the levels of insulin found in some newborns surpassed those ever recorded in adults with advanced pancreatic cancer. Such egregious actions pointed towards a clear abuse of power and a complete disregard for the sanctity of life.
Surviving mothers recounted harrowing experiences of witnessing Agüero’s actions, with one mother recalling how she saw the nurse take her baby, only to return the infant moments before they stopped breathing. The devastating impact of Agüero’s actions was evident in the irreversible neurological damage suffered by one infant linked to insulin injection, while another developed severe scoliosis following a potassium injection. The long-lasting repercussions of these cruel acts will forever haunt the survivors and their families.
In her defence, Agüero vehemently denied the accusations levelled against her, declaring in her final statement in court that she was not the ‘serial killer’ portrayed by the media. Despite her protestations of innocence, the court’s verdict was clear, leading to her imprisonment for life. The trial also saw five other individuals, including hospital and provincial health officials, convicted for their roles in concealing and neglecting their duties in the face of such grave misconduct. Accountability was finally meted out, albeit belatedly, bringing a semblance of justice to the grieving families and a measure of closure to a community rocked by this senseless tragedy.
As the scars of this horrific chapter begin to heal, the legacy of those innocent infants lost too soon serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring need for vigilance in protecting the most vulnerable among us. The case of Brenda Cecilia Agüero stands as a chilling cautionary tale of the devastating consequences wrought by individuals entrusted with the care and well-being of others, underscoring the paramount importance of upholding the highest standards of ethics and compassion in the field of healthcare.
