A devastating incident occurred in Hounslow, London, when a mother and her three young children lost their lives in a house fire ignited by a firework. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) revealed that the Kishen family was celebrating the festival of Diwali on the evening of November 11, 2023, when the tragic event took place. The victims were identified as Seema Ratra, 47, and her children Riyan, 11, Arohi, 8, and Shanaya, 4, along with two guests, Nitin Chopra, 28 and Sandhaya Chopra, 20.

During an inquest held at the West London Coroners Court on August 29, Senior Coroner Lydia Brown commended the heroic efforts of Seema’s husband and the children’s father, Aroen Kishen, in attempting to combat the flames. Aroen sustained burns while trying to extinguish the fire before ultimately losing consciousness. The blaze originated outside the house, spreading rapidly to the interior, forcing Aroen to evacuate the premises.

The LFB indicated that the fire likely started from a firework setting fire to combustible materials in a plastic recycling bin, with the exact source of the firework remaining unknown. Consultant Pathologist Dr Ashley Fegan-Earl stated during the court proceedings that the victims succumbed to smoke inhalation within a short span of time. Senior Coroner Brown categorised the incident as a catastrophic accidental house fire, deeming it a tragic misfortune.
Approximately 70 firefighters responded to the scene, endeavouring to contain the fire that had engulfed the ground and first floors of the building before spreading to the roof. Despite the valiant efforts of the emergency responders, the staircase partially collapsed, hindering rescue efforts. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Paul Askew of the London Fire Brigade extended condolences to the bereaved family and highlighted the inherent risks associated with fireworks, especially during festive occasions.
The community mourned the loss of the Kishen family and their guests, expressing profound sadness at the untimely demise of the children described as “three beautiful souls.” Tributes and floral arrangements adorned the vicinity of the residence, with heartfelt messages from classmates and well-wishers. The victims’ impact extended beyond their family, resonating deeply within the school community at Westbrook Primary School.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the London Fire Brigade reiterated the importance of fire safety awareness, particularly during celebratory events involving fireworks. Collaborative efforts with local authorities and community groups were emphasised to enhance public knowledge and prevent similar incidents in the future. The sorrowful events of that fateful Diwali night underscored the critical need for vigilance and precaution when handling fireworks to avert potential disasters.
The profound loss experienced by the Kishen family and their guests serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the imperative of safety measures in all festivities. As the community grieves the tragic outcome of a joyous occasion, efforts to educate and raise awareness on fire safety continue to be paramount. The memory of Seema, Riyan, Arohi, Shanaya, Nitin, and Sandhaya lives on in the hearts of those touched by their untimely departure, prompting reflection on the preciousness of every moment shared with loved ones.
