Leading toy company LEGO is set to launch its most expensive set to date, a Star Wars Death Star playset, in October, with a whopping price tag of $999.99. This highly anticipated release features over 9,000 pieces and includes a remarkable 38 minifigures. The set, officially named the Death Star – Ultimate Collector Series, is not only the priciest LEGO set but also the largest Star Wars set to date, measuring over 20.6 inches (52.3 cm) high, 18.9 inches (48.0 cm) wide, and 15.1 inches (38.3 cm) deep.

The Death Star playset showcases a circular slice of the iconic space station, encompassing key scenes from the movies “A New Hope” and “Return of the Jedi.” Among the detailed rooms included are the trash compactor, Princess Leia’s prison cell, and the tractor beam control room from “A New Hope,” as well as Emperor Palpatine’s throne room seen in “Return of the Jedi.”

Additionally, the set boasts a hangar bay with ample space to house both the Imperial Shuttle and Darth Vader’s meditation chamber, reminiscent of the one aboard his Star Destroyer in “The Empire Strikes Back.” An imposing Superlaser dish is featured, complemented by a display stand for figures of Galen Erso and Director Krennic from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
Fans can also expect to find a broad range of characters within the set, including favourites like Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Stormtroopers. A fun addition to the collection is the inclusion of a hot tub Stormtrooper, a playful reference from the LEGO Star Wars video games.
Scheduled for release in LEGO Stores on October 4, eager fans with insider access can preorder starting October 1 through the company’s website. To sweeten the deal, customers purchasing the set during the initial week will receive a complimentary gift – a small TIE Fighter with a hangar rack that integrates seamlessly into the main set.
While this particular Death Star set marks a milestone as the most expensive offering from LEGO, it is not the first rendition of this iconic structure from the Star Wars universe. In prior years, LEGO has produced Death Star sets that were full spheres, paying homage to memorable scenes from “A New Hope” and “Return of the Jedi.” Another notable instance includes a fully covered spherical Death Star II model from “Return of the Jedi,” released in 2005.
LEGO’s track record of crafting intricate and premium Star Wars sets is well-established, with noteworthy releases such as the Ultimate Collector Series Millennium Falcon in 2017, boasting 7,541 pieces at $849.99, and the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser released in 2023 at $649.99. The esteemed title of the largest LEGO set is held by the LEGO Art World Map, available from 2021 to 2023, containing 11,695 pieces. Currently, the Eiffel Tower stands as the largest LEGO set still in production, featuring 10,001 pieces.
As LEGO continues to captivate enthusiasts with innovative and detailed sets, the unveiling of the Death Star – Ultimate Collector Series marks another significant chapter in their longstanding partnership with Star Wars. Fans eagerly anticipate the launch of this extraordinary set, ready to embark on their own galactic adventures in the world of LEGO Star Wars.
