According to authorities from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, on July 21, David fired a handgun at the bird that had entered the brick building. Unfortunately, the bullet passed through the bird, went out of a window, and ended up hitting his daughter Emma, who was outside at the time. The sheriff’s department stated that David took precautions by only inserting his arm into the room and keeping his head outside to avoid any potential ricochet before pulling the trigger.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and immediately began life-saving efforts, including CPR, but tragically, Emma could not be saved. She was taken to a hospital in the St. Louis area, where she was pronounced dead. The case was handed over to the Monroe County State’s Attorney’s Office, leading to formal charges being filed against David and another person, Karen A. Schwarze, on Sept. 2.

Karen Schwarze, 58, is facing charges of concealing a homicide and obstruction of justice in connection to the teen’s death. Though authorities have not specified Schwarze’s relationship to the victim, the charges suggest her involvement in attempting to cover up the incident. David voluntarily surrendered at the Monroe County Jail and was processed before being released pending court proceedings. Schwarze is expected to turn herself in to the authorities soon.
