A new documentary titled “Disneyland Handcrafted” is set to honour the illustrious 70-year legacy of the iconic theme park. Premiering this winter on Disney+ and Disney YouTube, the film was announced by director Leslie Iwerks at Destination D23 over the weekend. The Walt Disney Company unveiled the trailer for the documentary during the “Creating The Happiest Place on Earth” panel at the event held in Orlando, Florida.

The documentary aims to capture the essence of the creation of Disneyland more than seven decades ago, providing viewers with a glimpse into the meticulous construction process behind the park. Utilising rarely seen footage handpicked from the Walt Disney Archives, the film promises an immersive and nostalgic experience for fans of the beloved theme park. The Disney Parks Blog exclaims, “This unique film, complete with ASMR moments, depicts the thoughtfulness and care that was put into the development of Disneyland.”


During the panel presentation at Destination D23, Leslie Iwerks, a highly esteemed filmmaker with Oscar and Emmy nominations, shared details about the documentary. Known for her work on the Disney+ docuseries “The Imagineering Story,” Iwerks introduced the first trailer for “Disneyland Handcrafted.” The trailer commences with a vintage voiceover from the 1950s, heralding the upcoming entertainment extravaganza that would soon be known as Disneyland, a groundbreaking venture at the time.
As the trailer progresses, it delves into Walt Disney’s visionary journey in bringing Disneyland to life, showcasing the risks and challenges he faced to materialise an unprecedented concept. Rare footage of the park’s construction process, meticulously captured by several cameramen as per Disney’s instructions, unfolds throughout the documentary. The narrative builds up to the park’s miraculous opening on July 17, 1955, against all odds and amidst a flurry of challenges.
Highlighting the dedication and craftsmanship of the artists, craftsmen, and Walt Disney Imagineers involved in Disneyland’s construction, the documentary promises viewers an intimate look at the creative minds behind the park’s inception.
