Jesse Tyler Ferguson, popularly known for his role in Modern Family, shared a delightful and entertaining reunion moment with his co-star Sofía Vergara from the same series. The two actors, who have a strong bond off-screen as well, met up at the Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater in New York City. The exclusive details of their reunion were revealed in an interview with PEOPLE.

The heartwarming incident unfolded when Vergara, 53, reached out to Ferguson, 49, expressing her interest in attending the play. Ferguson mentioned to PEOPLE, “Sofía texted me out of the blue, saying, ‘I think I’m going to be in New York, can I get a ticket?’ Of course, I helped her.” The charming duo was joined by Ferguson’s husband, Justin Mikita, and their adorable 5-year-old son, Beckett Mercer, at the preview showing on August 16.

Despite facing physical challenges with Mikita breaking his foot and Vergara undergoing knee surgery, the pair managed to bring along young Beckett to the park for the event, leading to some comical situations. Ferguson shared, “My husband just broke his foot and Sofía just had knee surgery. So, the two of them bringing a 5-year-old into the park was hilarious.” To ease their journey, Ferguson arranged for a golf cart to transport them to the theater.
The chemistry between the stars extended beyond the stage, with Vergara thoroughly enjoying the play despite her recent knee procedure. Ferguson expressed his admiration for Vergara’s gesture, stating, “She loved the show. I assumed she was in town to do other things and she just happened to be here to see me, but no, she flew in to see this. She’s a good friend.” The camaraderie between the cast members was evident as Vergara lauded Ferguson’s performance on Instagram, endorsing his talent and the overall production.
The connection between Ferguson and Vergara dates back to their time on the hit sitcom Modern Family, where they shared the screen from 2009 to 2020. Apart from Beckett, Ferguson and Mikita’s family also includes Sullivan “Sully” Louis, making their bond even stronger. Known for his versatility, Ferguson has graced the stage with previous Shakespearean roles and clinched a Tony Award in 2022 for his Broadway performance in Take Me Out.
Reflecting on the enduring relationship with the Delacorte Theater, Ferguson highlighted the recent renovations that have elevated the venue’s appeal. He reminisced about the improvements, particularly the upgraded facilities, stating, “The thing I got most excited about were the new bathrooms. They were so bad earlier. The dressing room had the air of a dungeon. There were cinder block walls and it just wasn’t a nice place to hang out.”
As the tale of twins Sebastian and Viola unfolds in Twelfth Night, portrayed by real-life siblings Junior Nyong’o and Lupita Nyong’o, the production promises a captivating narrative of survival amidst various challenges. Directed by Saheem Ali, the play also features a stellar cast including Sandra Oh, Peter Dinklage, and Daphne Rubin-Vega. The Shakespeare in the Park’s rendition of Twelfth Night is set to run until September 14.
In a world where genuine connections are cherished, the reunion between Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sofía Vergara stands as a testament to enduring friendships and shared moments of joy. Their heartwarming gathering at the theatrical extravaganza exemplifies the power of camaraderie and the magic of live performances that continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
