Katelynn Strate, a 17-year-old pregnant teen, tragically lost her life after being shot in the head during a road rage incident. She gave birth to her premature baby via an emergency C-section before passing away. The incident took place in Louisiana, where Strate was travelling in a Ford Expedition with two companions on North Hoover Road in Ponchatoula. They encountered the suspect, Barry West, 54, who shot at their vehicle following a dispute on the road, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) report shared on Facebook.
The investigation revealed that after an exchange of aggressive driving behaviour between the vehicles, Barry West fired a shot into the Expedition where Katelynn was sitting in the front passenger seat. Despite being critically injured, the driver immediately took Katelynn to the hospital after realising she had been shot. Strate’s family donated her organs following her untimely death. The baby, born prematurely at 28 weeks, is currently receiving medical care in the NICU and is reported to be doing well under the circumstances.
After discovering no evidence of the victims firing back at West, the TPSO determined that the shooting was unprovoked and that no weapon was present in the car. Initially booked for multiple charges including Attempted Second Degree Murder, West now faces an upgraded charge of 2nd Degree Murder following Katelynn’s passing. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there was no known association between West and their staff, addressing rumours of any possible connection.
Sheriff Gerald Sticker expressed his condolences, labelling the incident as a “senseless tragedy” and highlighting the importance of safe and considerate driving practices. He urged the public to report any safety concerns while on the road. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Strate’s grandmother who will be caring for the newborn baby and to help cover funeral costs and medical expenses. As of the latest update, the fundraising campaign had raised almost $25,900, showcasing an outpouring of support for the family in their time of need.
