At a press conference following the horrific event, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the shooting as an “unthinkable tragedy” that took place during a mass service at the church. Among the attendees were numerous children who had come together as part of their first week back at school. The assailant, armed with a rifle, unleashed gunfire through the church windows, claiming the lives of two children aged 8 and 10 who were seated in the pews.

Of the 17 individuals wounded in the shooting, 14 were children, with two of them currently in critical condition, as reported by O’Hara. Providing an update on the victims’ status, Thomas Wyatt, chair of emergency medicine at Hennepin Healthcare, stated that 11 patients were admitted, including 9 children, with 7 of them in critical condition. The young victims range in age from 6 to 14 years old, highlighting the heartbreaking impact of the senseless attack.
Authorities revealed that the suspect, believed to be in his early 20s, deployed three different weapons during the shooting: a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol, all fired from outside the church through its windows. It is suspected that the assailant died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and investigators are currently examining a vehicle thought to have been used by the shooter. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, leaving the community grappling with grief and disbelief.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, visibly shaken by the tragedy, emphasised the profound impact of the incident, stating, “You cannot put into words the gravity, tragedy, or pain of this situation.” His sentiments were echoed by Governor Tim Walz, who expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, acknowledging the trauma that has marred what should have been a time of new beginnings for the children returning to school.
The devastating events that unfolded at the Minneapolis church have sent shockwaves through the city, prompting an outpouring of support and prayers for the victims and their families. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, there remains a collective call for peace, healing, and justice. The tragic loss of young lives serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of gun violence and safeguard our schools and places of worship from such unfathomable tragedies.
