In a recent exclusive interview with PEOPLE, renowned actor Mark Ruffalo disclosed an intriguing aspect of how he prepared for his upcoming role as an FBI agent in the HBO show “Task.” Ruffalo, 57, shared that he delved into the food culture of Philadelphia, the setting of the series, by indulging in numerous Philly cheesesteak sandwiches as part of his preparation process.
During the All the President’s Men reading event to benefit the Center at West Park, Ruffalo shed light on his unconventional approach to getting into character for the role. By immersing himself in the popular regional dish featuring beefsteak slices and melted cheese in a hoagie roll, the versatile actor mentioned, “I just put a bunch of weight on.”

Furthermore, Ruffalo took his dedication a step further by consulting with FBI agent Scott Duffey to ensure the authenticity of his portrayal on screen. Reflecting on his interactions with Duffey, Ruffalo remarked, “I spent a lot of time with FBI agent Scott Duffey. That’s about the most I did.”

As the premiere date of “Task” approaches on September 7, Ruffalo expressed his enthusiasm for the series and highlighted that his current priority is generating awareness through press engagements. The drama, set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, centres around an FBI agent leading a task force to combat a sequence of violent robberies orchestrated by an unsuspecting family man, portrayed by Tom Pelphrey.
The seven-episode series, helmed by Brad Ingelsby of “Mare of Easttown,” boasts a star-studded cast including Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, and Sam Keeley, among others. Ruffalo, who also serves as an executive producer, collaborated with an ensemble that includes former Marvel co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, underlining the significance of supporting journalism through their involvement.
In a poignant moment of solidarity for the preservation of community-driven spaces, Ruffalo participated in a one-night reading of the 1976 political thriller based on the Watergate scandal. The event, held at Guild Hall in East Hampton, aimed to raise awareness and support for the historic West Park Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, facing threats of demolition for commercial development.
Ruffalo’s dedication to both his craft and social causes shines through as he uses his platform to advocate for the preservation of spaces that nurture emerging talent. By candidly sharing his preparation process and involvement in meaningful initiatives, Ruffalo exemplifies a multi-faceted approach to his career beyond the realms of entertainment.
