Reports have emerged about a suspected outbreak of Salmonella at a hotel in Spain, where over 100 individuals have fallen ill. The incident took place at the Hotel Izán Cavanna in La Manga, in the Murcia region, and has raised concerns about food safety at the establishment.

According to local media sources, the outbreak was first noticed when 28 cases were reported in the early hours of Sunday, August 24. As the day progressed, the number of affected individuals increased to over 100, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in some cases, fever. Shockingly, among those affected was a 15-month-old baby, as well as several children.
The Regional Ministry of Health in Murcia confirmed that the guests started showing symptoms of suspected Salmonella poisoning following a meal served on Saturday, August 23. It is believed that around 800 guests were present at the hotel during that time. Salmonella is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the intestinal tract, often transmitted through contaminated water or food.
In response to the outbreak, emergency services were mobilized at the hotel, and 20 patients were transported to the Santa Lucía Hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, most individuals have been discharged, with only two still under medical care. As a precautionary measure, the hotel’s kitchen has been temporarily shut down, and a comprehensive cleaning and sanitization process has been initiated.
To ensure guests are not left without catering services, an external company has been brought in to provide meals while the hotel kitchen remains closed. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the outbreak, though initial reports suggest that a spinach-filled pasta dish could be responsible for the illness.
While attempts to reach out to Hotel Izán Cavanna and Santa Lucía Hospital for further details were unsuccessful at the time, concerned guests have shared their experiences. A mother of a 10-year-old girl reported her daughter’s severe symptoms, highlighting the distressing impact of the outbreak on families staying at the hotel.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining high food safety standards in hospitality establishments. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to identify the source of contamination and prevent similar outbreaks in the future. Consumers are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of foodborne illnesses to the relevant health authorities promptly.
This incident underscores the need for stringent regulations and monitoring in the food service industry to safeguard public health. It also highlights the swift response required to contain outbreaks and protect the well-being of guests and customers. The aftermath of the Salmonella outbreak at the Spanish hotel serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the critical role of food safety practices in preventing such health crises.
