Mastodon, the popular rock band, honoured their late bandmate Brent Hinds in a heartfelt tribute during their first concert since his passing. The emotional event took place at the Alaska State Fair, where drummer Brann Dailor addressed the audience, expressing the band’s deep sorrow over Hinds’ untimely death in a motorcycle crash.
Dailor, who has been with the band for 25 years, described Hinds as one of the most creative and beautiful people they had ever encountered. The guitarist had been a vital part of Mastodon since its inception in 2000 until his tragic passing at the age of 55. The band and fans alike were devastated by the loss of such a talented and cherished member.
During the performance, Dailor shared fond memories of the band’s journey with Hinds, highlighting the brotherly bond they shared despite the inevitable ups and downs over the years. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create music together and affirmed that their musical legacy with Hinds would endure the test of time.
Despite the profound grief and sense of loss, Dailor reassured the audience that Mastodon would continue to play the music they had crafted with Hinds’ unique talents. He recounted adventures of touring the world together, reminiscing about the challenges they overcame and the camaraderie they shared with audiences on stage.
The tragic accident occurred when Hinds’ Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with a BMW SUV that failed to yield at an intersection, as reported by Atlanta News First. The band, in a heartfelt Instagram post, expressed their deep sadness and shock over the sudden loss of their creative force, with whom they had shared countless achievements and milestones throughout their musical journey.
As Mastodon navigates this period of profound grief and adjustment, they are deeply thankful for the outpouring of support from fans and the music community. The band is set to continue their tour with upcoming performances in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 26 and in New Orleans, La., on Nov. 15, as they honour Hinds’ memory and musical contributions.
