‘Remarkable’ 10-Year-Old Girl Earns a Surprise Full-Ride College Scholarship

Georgia Girl, 10, Awarded Full Scholarship to SC State University

A remarkable 10-year-old girl from Georgia, Kendall Rae Johnson, has recently been awarded a full-ride scholarship to South Carolina State University. The scholarship, valued at $83,800, covers tuition, fees, as well as room and board at the university. The surprise scholarship was presented to Kendall during her visit to the SC State campus by the university’s President, Alexander Conyers.

President Conyers expressed his admiration for Kendall’s exceptional knowledge and maturity, stating, “It’s not every day you meet a 10-year-old who talks about microorganisms, crop counts and longhorn cattle. She’s remarkable.” Kendall’s passion and expertise in farming played a significant role in her earning the scholarship, as she is the youngest USDA-certified farmer in the nation.

During the scholarship presentation, Kendall’s excitement was palpable as she jumped out of her chair and expressed her gratitude with a heartfelt “Thank you.” The scholarship is part of SC State’s 1890 Agriculture Innovation Scholarship program, designed to cultivate a career-ready workforce for the agriculture and ag-related industries. Kendall’s journey in farming began at the age of 3 when she started growing collard greens, and she now tends to an acre of land passed down through her family.

“I like helping the community out with fresh fruits and vegetables,” Kendall shared in an interview with SC State. Her farming ventures include a variety of produce such as peaches, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, apples, beets, carrots, tomatoes, and okra. Additionally, Kendall enjoys exploring different farming techniques and learning from other farmers to enhance her skills and knowledge in agriculture.

Accompanied by her parents, Ursula and Quentin, Kendall visited SC State, a historically black college and university (HBCU), where she was welcomed with open arms. The university’s gesture of awarding Kendall the full scholarship serves as a testament to her dedication and passion for agriculture at such a young age. Kendall’s story is not just inspirational but also highlights the importance of nurturing talent and fostering educational opportunities for young individuals.
