Lucas Champion, a dedicated bus driver for the Fairfax County Public School District in Virginia, made quite a stylish statement on the first day of the school year. He surprised his students by donning a black tuxedo to chauffeur them to school on Monday, August 18th. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Champion shared that the decision to wear his groomsman tuxedo from 2016 was completely spontaneous.

Champion, aged 33, who joined the district in April, disclosed that he was once a student in the same district, and interestingly, one of his former teachers was the one who captured the now-viral photo of him in the tuxedo. The idea to wear the tuxedo struck him as he was spending time with his family the night before school started, listening to music and feeling a sense of joy. When ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man” played – a song he associates with dressing up for special occasions – the idea to wear the tuxedo on the first day of school was born.

Despite not seeking permission from the school to wear the tuxedo, Champion mentioned that the district does expect its faculty to maintain a presentable appearance, although perhaps not as formally as a tuxedo. He even had to consider the practicality of his outfit choice, wary of getting oil or engine fluids on the pristine ensemble. Champion’s dedication to his role as a bus driver was evident as he took these factors into account before embarking on his first-day fashion endeavor.
The response to Champion’s unconventional attire was overwhelmingly positive, with students, parents, and faculty alike expressing their delight. While some students may not have reacted immediately in the morning – possibly still in the summer holiday mindset – their curiosity and admiration for the tuxedo grew as the day progressed. Champion shared how he received compliments and questions from his young passengers throughout the day, making the whole experience even more rewarding.
Navigating the Virginia summer heat in a tuxedo proved to be challenging for Champion, as he humorously described the experience of constantly wiping away perspiration. Despite the discomfort, he acknowledged that the positive impact his outfit had on others and the joy it brought made it all worth it. Reflecting on the success of his sartorial choice, Champion hinted that this might become an annual tradition, aiming to bring smiles, happiness, and a sense of relief to all involved on the first day of school.
As communities strive to find moments of joy and connection, gestures like Champion’s tuxedo debut serve as heartwarming reminders of the power of simple acts of kindness. In a world often filled with stress and challenges, his initiative to bring a touch of elegance and cheer to the school environment is truly commendable. Here’s to hoping that more individuals, like Lucas Champion, will continue to spread positivity and create memorable moments for those around them.
