Tragedy struck an Alabama family earlier this month as a couple passed away unexpectedly within just two days of each other, leaving their loved ones in deep mourning. Johnny Schmidthorst, 48, suffered a fatal heart attack on August 16 at their home in Prattville. Devastatingly, his wife Tammy, 53, was found dead in their bedroom just a day after making arrangements for his funeral. While the official cause of Tammy’s passing is yet to be determined, Johnny’s brother Joey Prusha believes it may have been due to a broken heart.

Joey Prusha, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, described the couple as “genuinely good people.” Johnny was a hardworking individual who operated a moving business, while Tammy dedicated her career to nursing. The couple had been together for around two decades and shared a strong bond based on love and mutual respect. They were known for their kind hearts and willingness to assist others in need, making their sudden departure all the more poignant.

The chain of tragic events began on a fateful Saturday when Johnny suffered a massive heart attack, despite Tammy’s efforts to administer CPR before medical assistance arrived. The following day, as they began preparing for Johnny’s funeral arrangements, the grief-stricken Tammy selected his casket and even chose a song for the service. Witnessing her profound sorrow, Joey Prusha recalled, “You could just see the pain in her eye. She was devastated.”
On the day Tammy was expected to take Johnny’s clothes to the funeral home, she was unresponsive and eventually discovered lifeless in their bedroom. While the circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation by the Prattville Police Department, Joey Prusha expressed his belief that she may have succumbed to the emotional turmoil of losing her beloved husband. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, Prusha’s heartfelt conviction reflects the profound impact of their untimely deaths on their family.
The couple’s legacy extends beyond their own lives, as they leave behind three children from previous relationships and six grandchildren. Those closest to Johnny and Tammy have initiated a fundraising campaign to cover the expenses of their funeral, scheduled for August 26 in Millbrook. Their relatives and friends aim to honour the memory of the loving couple by giving them a dignified send-off, highlighting their selfless nature and unwavering commitment to helping others.
As the grieving process unfolds for the Schmidthorst family, Joey Prusha emphasises that his brother and sister-in-law should be remembered for the love and compassion they shared with those around them. Their tragic passing serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring power of love and resilience in the face of adversity. In the midst of sorrow, the family finds solace in the belief that Johnny and Tammy are reunited in eternal peace, their spirits intertwined in a bond that transcends earthly existence.
