A tragic discovery was made on a U.K. beach, over three weeks after a father of two disappeared while swimming. The man’s remains have not yet been officially identified. His partner had previously expressed the harrowing experience of feeling like they were “living in a nightmare” during the ongoing search.
The body was spotted by a swimmer at Tunstall Beach in Holderness, East Yorkshire, on Thursday, August 21, around 5:30 p.m. local time, as reported by the BBC and The Gazette and Herald. While the man has not been formally named, authorities believe the finding is connected to the concerns raised regarding safety at Thornwick Bay in Flamborough, the location where the father, Matt McDavid, was last seen swimming before his disappearance on Wednesday, July 30.

A spokesperson for the Humberside Police informed, “A post-mortem examination will take place in the coming days; however, at this time, the circumstances are not thought to be suspicious.” The news follows the heartfelt statement by Michelle Sigsworth, McDavid’s partner, who had been enduring a nightmare since his vanishing at the age of 42.

McDavid was just beginning to swim in Thornwick Bay in the North Sea when he suddenly went out of sight from Sigsworth. The couple had been exploring a cave they discovered while kayaking nearby. Sigsworth recounted, “As I was videoing, I was thinking the waves are getting stronger. We just couldn’t visualize him in the ocean at all, it was like the current must have taken him.”
Despite immediate rescue efforts by local coast guard teams, adverse weather conditions posed challenges. The Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team declared, after extensive search operations involving land, air, and sea, that the missing swimmer had not been located, and all operations were ceased on Thursday, July 31.
Following this, marine divers from Humberside Police continued scouring the area in hopes of finding any trace of McDavid. In an emotional interview with the Daily Express, Sigsworth praised McDavid’s dedication to their children, describing him as a phenomenal dad who always put his daughters first.
“He is a brilliant guy who would do anything for the kids. He is absolutely amazing with the girls. He is a brilliant dad, even with my eldest daughter, and he treats her like his own,” Sigsworth shared. The heartbreaking situation has left the family and loved ones in deep distress.
The community and authorities are united in offering support and condolences to the family during this incredibly challenging time. The search for answers continues as investigations and formal identification procedures are carried out to ascertain the identity of the recovered body.
Tragic events like this serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of water safety. The stories of strength and resilience displayed by families facing such heart-wrenching situations underscore the power of unity and support during difficult times.
