Aimee Betro, a Wisconsin woman, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after traveling to the United Kingdom to execute a murder on behalf of a lover she met on a dating app. The sentencing took place following Betro’s conviction for conspiracy to murder and two firearms charges, as reported by the BBC, The London Standard, and The Guardian.
Betro, aged 45, embarked on a journey to the UK in 2019 with the intent to assassinate Sikander Ali in Birmingham. Disguised in a niqab, she sought to carry out the killing at the behest of her lover, Mohammed Nazir from Derbyshire. Nazir had a dispute with Ali, and tensions between their families had escalated after Nazir and his father, Mohammed Aslam, were injured during a confrontation at a clothing store owned by Ali’s father.

During the sentencing, Judge Simon Drew KC highlighted Betro’s significant role in the criminal conspiracy, stating, “You went beyond simply reaching an agreement to kill and, in reality, you did intend to kill Mr. Ali.” Despite her attempts, Ali managed to escape harm due to a gun malfunction during the first encounter, and subsequent gunfire caused damage to his property.

After the failed attempt, Betro managed to evade capture for five years until a reporter from the Daily Mail tracked her down in Armenia. Subsequently, she was extradited to the UK to face charges. Additionally, Nazir and Aslam were convicted on conspiracy to murder charges, with Nazir receiving a 32-year prison sentence and Aslam receiving a 10-year sentence.
While handing down the sentence, Judge Drew considered Betro’s personal circumstances, including her history and age, and acknowledged her expression of remorse in a letter. Furthermore, he noted that she would serve a portion of her sentence in a UK prison, far away from her home.
Following the sentencing, West Midlands Police Detective Alastair Orencas commended the collaborative efforts involved in bringing Betro to justice. He highlighted the extensive investigative work that went into tracing her activities in the UK and expressed gratitude to various agencies for their support.
The case of Aimee Betro serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in international criminal investigations and underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies to ensure individuals are held accountable for their actions. The sentencing also reflects the UK’s commitment to upholding justice in cases of serious criminal offenses.
