An Air France flight departing from New York’s JFK International Airport had to make a dramatic U-turn over the Atlantic Ocean after the pilot declared an emergency. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 19, as Flight AF9, a Paris-bound Boeing 777-300ER, took off from JFK at 12:28 a.m. local time. The flight was carrying 311 passengers and crew, along with 6.5 hours’ worth of fuel.

During the course of the flight, the pilot reported a right engine failure, leading to the declaration of a distress signal with the words, “Mayday, mayday, mayday.” This urgent call for help was captured in an audio recording obtained by LiveATC.net. The crew quickly squawked 7700, signalling an international distress code, and requested to return to JFK Airport.

The Air France plane made a swift turnaround, heading back towards New York City. The flight landed back at JFK at 2:15 a.m., just over two hours after takeoff. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, attributing it to a possible engine issue. They assured that the flight returned safely and stated their intent to investigate further.
Unfortunately, Air France did not provide an immediate response to queries from PEOPLE regarding the incident. This event comes in the wake of another harrowing experience involving an American Airlines flight just days earlier. On August 17, American Airlines Flight 2616, departing from Boston Logan International Airport, had to declare a mayday shortly after takeoff due to multiple failures on board.
The pilot communicated the need for an emergency landing back in Boston due to issues with the autopilot, auto-thrust, and flight management systems. The flight was able to safely return to Boston Logan around 7:30 p.m., as confirmed by the FAA. American Airlines acknowledged a maintenance issue and took the aircraft out of service for inspection post-landing.
As incidents like these continue to highlight the challenges faced in aviation, it is essential for authorities and airlines to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and crew alike. Stay tuned for updates on these incidents and more news within the aviation industry as they unfold.
