Shoppers at a grocery store in Indonesia received the surprise of a lifetime when they came across a 10-foot-long crocodile strolling through the aisles. The reptile managed to enter the Fujiyama supermarket located in the village of Wayo, situated in the North Maluku province of Indonesia on Sunday, August 17th. The unexpected visitor caused quite a commotion among the customers present.

The astonishing scene was captured on camera by terrified bystanders who witnessed the crocodile making its way through the store. Video footage shows the reptile scurrying around the supermarket, causing chaos as it moved along. Onlookers can be heard screaming and shouting in the background while attempting to record the extraordinary event. In one instance, an individual tried to coax the animal out of the store using a ladder, but the crocodile remained unmoved, gazing at the person with its mouth wide open.
Firefighters rushed to the scene to handle the situation and successfully escorted the crocodile outside, where it headed towards a nearby large puddle. Members of the firefighting team bravely managed to contain the reptile by lassoing it, covering its eyes with a cloth, and securing its mouth shut. The crocodile was then safely transported to a waiting vehicle for further action.
According to Senior Assistant Commissioner Adnan Wahyu, the local police chief, the crocodile likely found its way into the store from a nearby swamp due to recent heavy rainfall that may have flooded its natural habitat. Assuring the public’s safety, Wahyu mentioned, “The crocodile was secured by three Taliabu firefighters. The fire department team released the crocodile back into the water, which we believe is its home.”
While the crocodile did not harm anyone during the incident, authorities cautioned locals to remain vigilant, especially due to the recent increase in rainfall, which could lead to more crocodiles venturing out of the waters. Wahyu advised anyone who spots crocodiles in unexpected locations to contact the authorities promptly for assistance.
This startling occurrence follows another tragic incident in Indonesia where a father of four, identified as Arifuddin, lost his life to a crocodile attack in the Bulete River, South Sulawesi province. The 53-year-old, who was bathing in the river with his family, was unexpectedly attacked by a crocodile, resulting in a fatal outcome witnessed by his relatives and nearby villagers.
Crocodile attacks have become a growing concern in Indonesia, with 179 reported incidents in 2024 alone, making it the highest globally. Experts attribute this rise in attacks to the increasing presence of palm oil plantations that have altered the landscape and provided crocodiles with easier access to inland areas.
