Princess Elisabeth of Belgium has made headlines as the news of her future at Harvard University is revealed amidst President Donald Trump’s recent ban on foreign students. The Belgian royal, who is the heir to the throne, was enrolled at Harvard last year to pursue a master’s degree in public policy.

After completing her Bachelor of Arts in history and politics at Oxford’s Lincoln College, Princess Elisabeth, aged 23, was admitted to the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School in 2024 for her postgraduate studies. However, her return this year was uncertain due to the ban imposed by President Trump on foreign nationals entering the U.S. to study at institutions like Harvard.
Belgian royal journalist Wim Dehandschutter confirmed to HELLO! that Princess Elisabeth will be allowed to continue her studies at Harvard this fall. Despite the lack of an official statement from the royal family regarding the education controversy, the princess’s return to the university has been cleared following a federal judge’s decision to block the ban on June 30.
It was reported that Princess Elisabeth declined any special consideration based on her royal status, preferring not to receive preferential treatment over her fellow foreign classmates. The journalist mentioned that the royal family remained optimistic throughout the ordeal, considering alternative options such as online studies or attending a campus in another country if the ban had been upheld.
Dehandschutter also highlighted the delicate diplomatic position the royal family found themselves in, given the circumstances surrounding Trump’s directive. He shared insights on the palace’s approach to maintaining a low-key communication strategy to avoid creating any tension or controversy with the U.S. government.
As the eldest child of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, Princess Elisabeth is next in line to become Belgium’s first-ever queen regnant, succeeding her father. Apart from her academic pursuits, she has undergone military training at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels and holds the rank of second lieutenant in three branches of the Belgian Armed Forces.
The significance of Princess Elisabeth’s college years was underscored by Dehandschutter, who noted that this phase represents the last opportunity for her to experience a level of anonymity before stepping into her future role as an active Crown Princess and, eventually, queen. King Philippe, who ascended to the throne in 2013, has expressed his support for his daughter’s journey and emphasized the importance of giving her time to grow, explore, and develop personally.
With the recent developments allowing Princess Elisabeth to resume her studies at Harvard, the royal family can now focus on preparing her for the responsibilities that lie ahead. As Belgium anticipates the eventual reign of Princess Elisabeth, her academic pursuits and military training serve as crucial steps towards her future role as the country’s monarch.
