A 36-year-old man collapsed and later passed away while attending a music festival featuring the Australian rock group King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in Colorado. The victim, identified as Mathew Gawiak of Denver by Chaffee County Coroner Jeff Graff, experienced the medical emergency during the Field of Vision festival on Friday, August 15. The incident took place at Meadow Creek in Buena Vista on the festival’s opening night as reported by The Mountain Mail and Ark Valley Voice.
Chaffee County Sheriff Andy Rohrich confirmed that a death investigation is currently underway, with the autopsy results pending toxicology reports which can take up to 6-8 weeks to process, according to Graf. Neither the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office nor the Chaffee County Coroner have responded to requests for comments from PEOPLE. The tragic event has left the community in mourning, prompting a response from the band, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 20, the band expressed their deep sorrow and extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased individual. They highlighted the collaborative efforts of emergency teams during the medical emergency and urged support and compassion for all affected by the loss. On the final night of the festival, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard honoured Gawiak by performing two songs dedicated to his memory.
Following her husband’s untimely passing, Gawiak’s wife, Allison Zangle, launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for his funeral expenses. The fundraiser has seen an overwhelming response, with donations surpassing $50,000 as of August 20. Zangle described Gawiak as a loving husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend, emphasizing his genuine and kind nature. She reflected on his passions and his commitment to bring happiness to those around him through shared experiences.
Remembered as a master’s degree holder and geospatial scientist, Gawiak’s dedication to spreading joy amongst his loved ones was evident throughout his life. Zangle found solace in the knowledge that he was surrounded by music and a community that meant so much to him in his final moments. The tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of supporting one another during times of loss and hardship, demonstrating the impact of a caring and empathetic community.
As the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding Gawiak’s passing, the community remains united in grief and remembrance. The response from both the festival organisers and attendees showcases the power of solidarity and compassion in times of tragedy. The legacy of Matt Gawiak lives on through the outpouring of support and generosity shown by those touched by his presence and his spirit of kindness and love.
