A fisherman attempting to take a photo with a shark ended up being bitten by the animal and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Florida. Shawn Meuse, the injured man, reflected on the scary incident that occurred during a birthday fishing trip with his friends on Cayo Costa, an island near Boca Grande, Fla.

The encounter took a sharp turn when Meuse decided to pose with a lemon shark, as captured in a video on his Facebook page. In the clip, Meuse can be seen holding the shark’s mouth before it unexpectedly bit him and swam off. “We just finished taking the hook out of his mouth. We were gonna go release him, and the shark just turned and bit me,” Meuse recounted to CBS affiliate WINK.
After the incident, Meuse was attended to by emergency services, including the Boca Grande Fire Department, who responded to the distress call about a shark bite. Fire Chief C.W. Blosser confirmed that the injuries were severe, requiring Meuse to be airlifted for medical treatment.
Reflecting on the incident, Meuse remarked from his hospital bed that he felt both unlucky and lucky at the same time, acknowledging the close call of the attack. Despite the ordeal, he expressed a nonchalant attitude, saying, “I might not be here if it was a few inches one way.”
Authorities have issued a warning reminding individuals to remain vigilant when interacting with wildlife in natural settings, emphasizing the importance of safety. Lemon sharks, like the one involved in the incident, are protected species in Florida waters and should not be harvested, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Although Meuse indicated that he did not possess a permit for shark fishing, he clarified that he was not the one who initially caught the lemon shark. Naturalist Rob Howell criticised the handling of the shark in the video, noting the lack of respect shown towards the animal during the encounter.
Following the harrowing experience, Meuse shared his intention to return to the beach if given the chance, indicating resilience in the face of the incident. Despite the incident, he conveyed a light-hearted message to the shark that attacked him, suggesting a sense of humour amidst the ordeal.
In light of this incident, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife interactions and the importance of respecting and preserving the natural habitat of these creatures. As Meuse continues his recovery, his story sheds light on the risks and unexpected turns that can occur in outdoor activities, urging caution and mindfulness when engaging with wildlife.
The event serves as a cautionary tale for individuals venturing into natural environments, highlighting the need for awareness and respect towards wildlife. The incident also underscores the significant role of emergency services in responding to wildlife-related incidents promptly and providing essential medical care in critical situations. Meuse’s experience serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between human interaction and wildlife encounters, emphasising the need for responsible behaviour in shared environments.
