A troop of Boy Scouts from Wisconsin finds themselves in a precarious situation as Hurricane Erin wreaks havoc in the U.S. Virgin Islands, leaving them stranded far from home. The 10 members of Boy Scout Troop 851, along with their leaders, had embarked on a sailing and snorkeling trip to St. Thomas that was meant to be a week-long adventure. However, their plans took an unexpected turn as Hurricane Erin strengthened in the Atlantic, forcing them to seek shelter on the island.

Troop Leader Ryan Schroeder shared that their attempt to evacuate and return home on August 14 was unsuccessful, leaving them in a tense situation amidst the looming storm. The group’s initial excitement for the trip has now transformed into a challenging ordeal, with uncertainties surrounding their journey back to Wisconsin before the school year commences. The unforeseen extension of their stay has led to financial strain, including additional costs for accommodation, meals, and revised travel arrangements.

Seeking assistance, one of the troop leaders, Sara Lee Reysen, set up a GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds for their return journey. The campaign has garnered over $11,000 in donations, reflecting the outpouring of support for the stranded scouts. With the earliest available flights scheduled for August 22 or 23, the troop is facing a waiting game to secure their passage home, navigating through potential flight disruptions caused by the hurricane.
The perseverance and dedication of these young scouts have been evident in their fundraising efforts leading up to the trip. Through car parkings, popcorn sales, candy fundraisers, and selling Christmas wreaths, they diligently worked to finance their expedition. Now, their resilience is being tested as they navigate the challenges posed by Hurricane Erin and the uncertainties surrounding their return journey.
Josh Kilian, one of the scouts, highlighted the troop’s shared hope to reunite with their families and friends back home before the school term begins. Embodying the Scout motto of being prepared for any situation, they are approaching this unforeseen turn of events with a positive outlook, determined to overcome the obstacles in their path. Despite the setbacks, Troop Leader Ryan Schroeder emphasized the resilience and adaptability of the scouts, framing their current predicament as a unique adventure that they are facing as a team.
The community response to their plight serves as a heartwarming reminder of the kindness and support that can emerge in times of adversity. As the troop navigates through the challenges posed by Hurricane Erin, their story resonates as a testament to the strength and camaraderie that define the scouting spirit. With the generosity of donors and well-wishers, the Boy Scouts of Troop 851 are hopeful to soon complete their interrupted journey and return home safely, carrying with them valuable lessons of resilience and unity.
In the midst of a natural disaster that has disrupted their plans, these young scouts embody the essence of preparedness and teamwork, inspiring others to rally behind them in their quest to navigate through uncertainty and find their way back home.
